It may be the shortest month on the calendar but for many of us it seems like the longest. So while we work to get ever so close to that wonderful glimpse of spring, here are some tips to keep your immune system strong and able to ward off the February ills.

  • Sleep Well: 6-8 hours a night-Sleep can rebuild the body’s defenses.
  • Work Out: Aerobic exercise can help build long term immunity to defend you body against viruses.
  • Laugh: Positive emotions associated with laughing can decrease stress hormones and increase immune cells.
  • Have Faith: Studies show that people who attend weekly or regular religious or spiritual services have a lower level of cancer and disease causing organisms.
  • Eat Power Foods: Improve or maintain you immunity by eating foods rich in Vitamins A, B6, C, E, Zinc and Iron.
  • Say No to Antibiotics: NEVER take antibiotics for colds. Over us of antibiotics can sometimes suppress the immune system. These should only be use for bacterial infections.
  • Go Easy on the Alcohol: Alcohol can smother cells that fight infection and leave you more prone to illness.
  • Be an Optimist: Having a positive outlook under stress can make you and your immune system feel high. A person’s outlook might affect responses to common immune challenges such as colds.

Remember to see your health care provider if colds persist. Try to keep drinking water throughout a cold or the flu, it keeps you hydrated and flushes the bad germs from your system.
