Leaf Collection & America Recycles Day

November also means all the beautiful autumn leaves end up in your yard and you must decide between composting or raking.  Some parts of Silver Spring offer Vacuum Leaf Collection which starts November 3rd and continues 6-8 weeks with 2 scheduled pick-up.  Visit SilverSpringCenter.com for more info and a 2008 Vacuum Leaf Collection Brochure.  Of course, you can always collect the leaves in yard bags and put them out on your trash/recycle day.

November 15th is America Recycles Day and an opportunity for residents to bring up to three paper bags or one office paper-sized box of personal paper per person for on-site shredding. Donations of clothing and household goods in usable and working condition are accepted.  For more information, visit SilverSpringCenter.com’s November Calendar.

Silver Spring Health:  Diabetes Awareness Month

Diabetes Awareness Month

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles.
There are 23.6 million children and adults in the United States, or 7.8% of the population, who have diabetes. While an estimated 17.9 million have been diagnosed with diabetes, unfortunately, 5.7 million people (or nearly one quarter) are unaware that they have the disease.
Find out more information about Diabetes Awareness Month by visiting SilverSpringCenter.com’s Health page.
